Many of us can recall the time when styling our hair by ourselves was completely off-limits and "mommy's job" and like me, I'm sure most of you could not wait to grow up and do as you wish with your hair. Well, when we finally grew older and started experimenting with our hair, too many of us went over the top - from coloring to cutting, to blow drying, to curling, and flat ironing and so on. Overtime frequent hairstyle changes (especially hairstyles that require heat) can be detrimental to the condition of our hair or long hair goals. Wearing natural hair can be exciting with endless styling possibilities, however, incorporating protective styles into my hair care regimen has helped me to maintain stronger and longer hair since I embarked on my natural hair journey.
Contrary to what some people say or think, braids are an excellent form of protective style for highly textured and curly hair types. Since braids do not require daily combing or heat, breakage should be minimal, as long as they are not too tight or place too much tension on the hair. It is also important to keep the scalp clean by shampooing and applying hair moisturiser often. People with highly textured hair benefit from braids as it requires little to no manipulation of the hair. Additional hair in the form of synthetic or human hair can also be added for even more versatility in color, thickness, length, and appearance in texture.

Although protective styling is great for maintaining healthy hair, it is also important to take care of the hair underneath. Having a protective style and letting the hair take care of itself, is simply not enough. Whether you sport a low cut, wear a weave, a natural style, or you are transitioning to natural, the work you put in while your hair is in protective style, will help you maintain healthy hair in the long run.
